Sub-Directorate: e-Learning

The South African government, through its White Paper 7 on e-Education (2004) has signaled its intention to progress education through the use of Information Communication Technologies (ICT). South Africa is in the process, as are many other countries, of charting its own developmental pathway in the digital age.Our present milieu is a digital one: according to Prensky (2001), this is signaled by the “arrival and rapid dissemination of digital technologies”, and, Lundall & Howell (2000), maintain that the primary commodities of our time, i.e. 'information and knowledge', are available to us as a result of the emergence of ICTs.

The perversions of this digital era proposes a technology push and an educational pull. It is against this background that the WCED’s contributions to e-Education is proposed. The vision is to work towards quality educational outcomes, and to employ ICTs, in a safe, and responsible manner, to support the teaching and learning process.

The  sub-directorate: e-Learning focuses on operationalising e-Learning through an e-Learning platform, comprising a Learning Management System (LMS - Moodle), and, a Curriculum Website. The sub-directorate will use the installed technology base available at schools, and through the e-Learning platform provide:

• access to digital resources in a range of media formats,
• integrated ICT training in a blended F2F/online mode,
• dedicated collaboration / communication spaces and,
• create opportunities to engage in e-learning practices.
