Today’s Choces is a programme that has been developed by the University of Stellenbosch (Dr Petrus Steyn) in collaboration with the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) to provide content for the FET Life Orientation learning outcome that deals with Personal Wellbeing. This programme will ensure that the Life Orientation teachers and learners will be empowered with the knowledge and skills required to demonstrate the achievement of the learning outcome. Personal well-being is central to fulfilling one’s potential while enabling learners to engage effectively in inter-personal relationships, community life and society. It focuses on life-style choices, self-concept, emotional literacy, social competency and life skills.  It also addresses issues like drug abuse, lifestyle diseases, sexuality, teenage pregnancy, sexually-transmitted infections (including HIV and AIDS), and the promotion of personal, community and environmental health. The WCED wishes to ensure that all teachers are trained in the content  in order to deliver the subject to learners in an efficient and effective manner.  A group of Master Trainers have been trained from 8 – 12 March 2010 to deliver the programme to teachers. The training was facilitated by Dr Steyn, Mrs Daleen Christiaans, and Mr Dirk Binneman.  The Master Trainer’s programme not only dealt with the content included in the 11 modules, but also provided information in ICT skills; young people and sexual and reproductive health rights; and, parent involvement in the subject. Master trainers included Life Orientation curriculum advisers, schools psychologists, HIV & AIDS co-ordinators and fieldworkers, and teachers belonging to the Retired Teachers Organisation.  Teacher training on Today’s Choices, will take place on 10-12 June 2010 at five venues across the districts, viz, Zandfliet Secondary, Sarepta Secondary, Rhodes High. Groenberg Secondary (Grabouw) and at the North Education District offices. Teachers have been invited to register via Curriculum Minute DCF 0003/2010.  Today’s Choices teacher Guides and Learner Books have been delivered to schools from 2009. For more books, schools may contact Mr Johan Kaizer at 021-4672126.
